Climatopia is a European project funded by the Erasmus+ programme that began in February 2022. Its main aim is to produce teaching materials and methods on education for sustainable development to be used in schools and in initial and continuing teacher training, and to be widely shared and discussed in communities.

Main objectives

  • Build students' scientific knowledge and green skills by putting what they learn to effective use within a simulation and decision-making game (Learning to do).
  • Provide "designed experiences" where players learn by doing and being, rather than by absorbing information from readings and traditional class formats (Learning to be).
  • Design highly engaging learning experiences that let players build empathy by taking on different roles and perspectives (Learning to live together: picturing yourself in the future and seeing the consequences of your actions at different points in time).

Results

  • Climatopia human needs handbook: a handbook covering basic human needs and the strategies for meeting them.
  • Climatopia education pack: covering the scientific knowledge children need, combining the power of visualisation with striking metaphors and character-driven storytelling.
  • Simulation and decision-making game: interactive models that let students quickly and easily test decisions and predict the outcomes of action on climate change.
  • Pilots, implementation and evaluation: a methodology, a set of evaluation tools (questionnaires and rubrics), national pilot reports and the Climatopia Final Report.
  • Climate perspectives: policy and policy recommendations: the project's conclusions, addressed at local, national, European and international level.
