In rural areas across Europe, many young people grow up facing significant social and educational challenges: limited access to quality education, fewer career opportunities and less exposure to diverse role models. As a result, young people in rural areas often feel disconnected, less motivated and short of opportunities for personal growth.

KHEIRON was created to close that gap. It offers an innovative model of intergenerational social mentoring that brings together older mentors and young people from rural communities. By fostering meaningful, structured relationships across generations, the project promotes personal development, active citizenship and inclusion for mentors and mentees alike. Its aim is to strengthen the social fabric of rural Europe while building a model that can be scaled and transferred to other contexts.

Main objectives

The KHEIRON project focuses on fostering all-round development and emotional resilience among young people in rural areas. It promotes inclusion and equal opportunities and supports active participation in community life. At its core, the project values intergenerational exchange as a way to enrich learning and empower people. Another key aim is to build a European network of mentors, with particular emphasis on involving older adults as active contributors to younger generations' wellbeing. KHEIRON also embeds gender and diversity perspectives across all its activities and materials, ensuring inclusive practice at every level of implementation. Finally, the project makes use of digital tools to improve access to mentoring and the quality of the training.

Results

Activity 1 - Methodological framework for mentors: the framework, with its learning modules, provides short foundational training covering theory as well as good practice and digital tools mentors can use in their mentoring.
Activity 2 - Implementation and development: delivering the training passes on to the target group everything set out on paper in the previous activity, guiding them through the platform and teaching them to use all the tools and resources developed.
